Dr Afrosa Ahmed MBBS, MRCGP, DCH.

Medical Doctor. Mindfulness Coach.

I have been practising as a General Practitioner in the NHS for over 20 years. I also see patients in the prestigious Harley street area in London. I graduated as a medical doctor from Guy’s, Kings’ and St Thomas’s Medical School in London, subsequently qualifying as a General Practitioner in 2005.

In addition, I have a special interest in children’s health, obtaining a Diploma in Child Health, from the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health in 2005. My work with young people has also extended to schools, being an Independent School Governor, a Clinical Professional Practice Tutor and a Personal Tutor at UCL Medical School, incorporating mindfulness practices into teaching medical students. I was a mindfulness teacher as part of the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust, teaching Mindfulness and Health to other healthcare professionals.

In the last decade, I have seen a huge growth in mental health problems. As a GP I began to explore alternative practices, which could not only help with these problems but also prevent them. I looked at various modalities, but mindfulness resonated with me the most. It is remarkably easy to do and most wonderful of all, you cannot fail at it.

This led me to set up my own company MindfulDoc - bringing together my knowledge of the human body with the ancient century-old practice of mindfulness. A practice that has virtually no side effects but produces profound changes in your life.

I obtained my mindfulness qualifications from the UK College of Mindfulness Meditation. I have key training in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) which is approved by the British Psychological Society. I am also an accredited teacher on the Mindfulness Teachers Register.

Medicine and Meditation come from the same root word, they are friends of one another. I believe in an approach that combines modern and traditional approaches to holistic healing.

To encourage the next generation of doctors to practise a mind-body approach and to protect their own mental well-being, I teach mindfulness to medical students across the country.  I also deliver talks to parents and students in schools and colleges. As one of the few specialists in this area, I am often approached to provide insight into medicine and mindfulness and have written several articles by various media organisations in the UK and the USA.
