I eventually realised each of these programmes failed to address my triggers, my relationship with food and my stressors, causing me to seek comfort in eating. Having tried diet after diet, Atkins, WW, Slimming world, Hypnotherapy, Jenny Craig, you name it, I thought ‘hold on I’m a doctor, I know the human body better than anyone else!’ So I decided to create my own, The MindfulDoc Weight Loss Programme was born: Change the Mind, Change the Weight.
Through mindfulness mediations I completely changed my thoughts about food and dealt with those factors causing me stress in life. I knew stress caused the release of hormones in the body that worked against weight loss, so this is where I needed to start. It wasn’t an overnight change, after all I had 10 years of unhealthy habits to undo. But the weight started to come off. I suddenly was aware of feeling full, often leaving my plate with food still on it! When those things causing me stress surfaced I reacted to them differently, soon peace and contentment became the predominant feeling. I no longer felt the need to eat to feel better. At that time I didn’t enjoy working out either, yet I soon dropped a dress size.
As my mindset changed so did my feelings abut myself. I was no longer anxious at buffets or parties, I no longer felt deprived of foods, I retrained my thoughts and entered a relaxed state of being, which helped me to overcome binge eating and overeating. More importantly, I felt confident to have my picture taken! But it didn’t stop there, my relationships flourished, doors opened , new opportunities just presented itself.
After tweaking a few aspects of the programme I tried it on friends and family. Soon word spread rapidly of this no-diet no-exercise weight loss programme.
